AMEB is a prestigious and well recognized examining body in Australia. It offers quality examinations in music, drama, speech and performing arts. Exams are available across all instruments including classical guitar.
What type of exams are offered?
Practical, theory and musicianship. Students can sit for all of them or they can simply choose to sit for a practical exam on their instrument.
What is the purpose of AMEB exams?
I encourage students to sit for AMEB exams, as it gives them a meaningful goal to work towards to, it inspires them to pursue their best and to strive for excellence. Completing their exam successfully can also give students a sense of accomplishment and pride. It can be a useful addition to their university application and a resume.
For those students who wish to achieve excellence on their instrument and as musicians, but who do not plan to study music at university level or have career as a musician, AMEB’s graded exam system offers an opportunity to reach a professional level of performance by completing the following levels:
Level 1 (preliminary to 4th grade)
Level 2 (5th to 8th grade (certificate of performance)
Level 3 (associate and licentiate diplomas (AMusA and LMusA)
When can students sit for an AMEB exam?
The classical exam is usually scheduled two times per year – one exam at the start of the year and the second one towards the end of the year.

How to enrol?
Students need to enrol by the enrolment deadline via this link.
Is there a fee?
Yes, the students will need to pay for an examination fee. The fees vary according to the grade the students are applying to sit for. Please check this timetable for the individual grades.
Do I need to buy an AMEB book?
AMEB graded repertoire books can be purchased online from the AMEB website.
They offer a small selection of pieces with different styles and from different periods, which are appropriate for the exam.
Alternatively, I may recommend to students different pieces from AMEB syllabus which are also suitable for the exam.
Students need to have an original copy of the pieces on the day and as well as present their examiner with the photocopies of the original.
What is a comprehensive AMEB exam?
Comprehensive AMEB exam includes not only practical exam, but also theory, musicianship, and technical exam. I can help students prepare for the comprehensive exam too. The students who choose to sit for it need to start preparing well in advance.
